Manual Coding of Affective and Non-Affective Content

1. Read the EmoCodes manual

We recommend downloading and reading the latest version of the manual before you watch the training videos below. The manual includes definitions for each code which serve as foundational knowledge for the training videos. We recommend learning the coding schema in chunks (e.g., starting with the objective codes before moving onto the subjective codes).

2. Watch the training videos below

After reading the section of the manual corresponding to the types of codes you’re working on, come back here and watch the training videos for that section (scroll down for the training videos).

3. Code a video clip

We provide a repository of short, already coded excerpts from My Little Pony (copyright Hasbro) and All Hail King Julien (copyright NBC Universal) at the bottom of this page. Use the clip guide to determine which clips contain the code(s) you are interested in then download the zip folder corresponding to that clip. Code the clip using Datavyu for each feature in passes (e.g., code has_faces for full clip before starting has_body). Once you have finished, export your codes to CSV.

4. Check the consistency between your codes and ours

Use the emocodes library to compare your codes to the ones we provided with the video clip (Consensus class). For a step by step tutorial, click here. We recommend aiming for at least 80% consistency with our codes for the subjective codes, 90% for the objective codes.

5. Code your own videos

Congrats! Once you achieve 80 or 90% consistency as appropriate, you are ready to start coding your own videos. Don’t forget to join the Google Group and ask questions as they arise.
