There are two main sections of the EmoCodes manual:
- Objective Codes: includes aspects of the video that are non-affective and should be straight forward to code (e.g., if there are faces on screen, if the scene is a close up or not, etc.)
- Subjective Character Codes: includes the subjective aspects of each character (e.g., character intensity, if the character’s face is angry, if the character’s body language is happy, etc.)
How to Use this Manual
After undergoing training, you can use the EmoCodes system to produce your own codes.
- Code the video in “passes” (one code at a time). It is recommended to have 2 independent raters do this.
- Validate each set of codes. The emocodes library can be used to do this (see example here).
- Once validated, convert the codes to timeseries format for imaging analysis using the emocodes library (see example here)
- Check the consensus and ICCs between the two raters (see example here). For the Objective codes, make sure to go back and recode any non-overlapping segments.
- Average the two coded files to produce your final file for analysis (see example here).
- Promote open science by submitting your codes to the public repository!
